It’s been a bit of a struggle recently to find time to write some articles. I’ve started one about regenerative hydrology but of course being a Permaculture designer means trying to connect ALL the dots. It’s taking me more time than I had anticipated!
I enjoyed myself yesterday, I presented the French and Francophone Permaculture networks and activities for the PermaTalks Volume 5. Around 2007 we designed how Permaculture should develop in France and so far so good. We’ve managed to promote the fact that Permaculture is hard-core Earth repair stuff done by people who know what they are doing and, in particular, know how to connect stuff together.
French Permaculture is mainly locally based, there is a national association but they limit their activities to organising an annual meet-up. There is the Université Populaire de Permaculture but this limits itself to promoting designers and design courses. We’ve managed to avoid creating a dominant centralising structure that acts as a gatekeeper into the Permaculture world. Which is good. We’ve also managed to avoid a sort of superstar system and we haven’t got any Permaculture gurus. Which is as it should be.
I mentioned this before, we are full on building up a francophone network via the nodal Université de Permculture Francophone. Link up, share information, experiences and results, all in French.
My acid test is car-sharing, something which is very popular in France. Car sharers tend to chat with each other and share stuff about themselves. 10 years ago when asked what I do, my rely ‘I’m a Permaculture engineer’ would bring on further questions like ‘what’s that then?’. Over the last decade this has changed and the replies are more generally like ‘Oh, that’s great stuff’. Job done? No, not quite, we’re going to launch a surprise this year, I’ll tell you all about it after we get it on :-)
Back to the Perma-talks, they aren’t finished, mine was just the first one. By the way, as Vihreä points out: ’All sessions will be recorded, so joining in is still worth it.’ So, if you were one of the 8 billion or so people who missed my talk you can still see it!
